I love contact paper...there I said it. You know, the stuff that was invented before laminators came along. When I was a little girl I remember my mom used to use contact paper to protect all the flannel board story characters she would use in her Primary lessons. Way back then I was mesmorized by the stuff and I would beg her to let me have the left over pieces so I could put it over my "artwork" to protect it or to make a pretend driver's license. I have been in love with the stuff for that long...everything about it; the feel of it, the 100 million ways to use, and the smell of it-especially the smell of it. It has a crisp plastic-y smell that almost always takes me back to my childhood.
I shouldn't be suprised that I'm so obsessed with it. It runs in my family. My grandma Mary Jane loves the stuff. Contact paper is manufactured in several varieties, not just the clear, protectant type. It comes with printed designs or plain colors. Often times those are used for kitchen shelf liners (which my grandma always used-she had a plaid print for a while). It also comes in the faux wood variety. My grandma thought this was the neatest type. Instead of refinishing an old beat up piano, she had the brilliant idea of refinishing it with faux wood contact paper. "I don't see why it wouldn't work" she said and has since become her most commonly used phrase. Contact paper was always a common commodity to be found at my grandma's house!
I went to the store to purchase contact paper and to my dismay they didn't carry it. It's times like these when I wished the Beaver Variety Store was close by. I KNOW they had some in the very back of the store and it's a shame I won't be able to buy it there next time. Variety is going out of business. I found it online and ordered 3 giant rolls. I don't know what I'm going to do with 3 giant rolls, maybe just take it out to smell it every once for a trip down memory lane. Or for now, I just used it to make a little "Uno"-like game for Singing Time this Sunday in Primary(as seen in the pictures ).

Your thoughtful preparation for singing time never ceases to amaze me! We are so grateful for all that you do for Primary.
Jen, I loved reading this! Too funny! I love things that remind me of my childhood. I bet your great doing the music in primary--what a fun calling! Okay and the part about your grandma refinishing her piano with contact paper--AWESOME! I love it!
Oh, the Variety Store. I can still smell it. That and the watermelon jolly rancher I would purchase there everyday of the summer. My mom told me the sad news about it closing.
